Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Rockies at Marlins (7/31)
Colorado @ Florida
The Marlins welcome the Rockies to town and I can only hope we show them the same hospitality they showed us earlier in the season. Colorado is trying to put together one of their patented end of the season runs. As far as I'm concerned, they do it elsewhere.
Oh, we will miss Aaron Cook during the four game set. And that ain't bad.
Anibal Sanchez returns to the mound for the Fish. This will be Sanchez's first time to face the Rockies, but really, every game he pitches this season will be sort of a first time. It will be very interesting to see how Anibal does.
De La Rosa has been doing all the good of late, giving up only 1 run per game in his last two starts. He does have some control issues in that he can walk a lot of batters. But he is also effectively wild and averages more than a strikeout an inning. De La Rosa is sinker ball pitcher.
Ichthyomancy is kinda sorta ready. Best of Luck to You!

Eh, there are worse left-handers, I suppose.

Btw manny would fill a need. Our bats have been seriously struggling. There is a serious misperception of our offensive firepower. An average of 7 runs a game sounds good to me!

trade
Just to chime in, I like the Manny trade proposals. It’s doubtful we’ll keep Hermida and Willingham through next year anyway. One of them has to go. We all know these chances don’t come often for the Marlins, so let’s go for it now.

For real.
Dang, had we known the Dodgers were interested, maybe we could’ve gotten Matt Kemp.

De la Rosa doesn’t reach the 5th inning
by Matt Wilson on Jul 31, 2008 5:18 PM EDT 0 recs
I can't believe we didn't get a catcher.
Probably the most aggravating thing of all. The front office definitely blew their load trying to steal manny (gammons and olney report it fell through because the marlins wanted $2mm on top of the 7MM for his salary) and didn’t pay attention to our needs. We could have had, at a minimum, a #5 hitter in Molina and instead we are stuck with our #8
by jrsyeagle on Jul 31, 2008 5:57 PM EDT 0 recs
Well, $2 million plus a prospect.
That’s what I love about our front-office…depending on your perspective, they’re either (a.) shameless or (b.) endowed with massive cojones.
Molina wasn’t my top choice by any stretch, but he would’ve been a decent addition. Maybe they felt good about the combination of Baker and a cortisone-filled Treanor. Either way, plenty of trades are made after the deadline, so it could still happen.

From John Hayman at SI
But that deal hit a snag, at least partly because the Marlins didn’t want to give up power-hitting prospect Mike Stanton or minor league pitcher Ryan Tucker, and wanted more money back from the Red Sox.
Oh, and I also love that the Marlins won’t overpay. If they think they’re offering fair value, they won’t be pressured into surrendering more just to make a splashy trade.

If it's a perfect game I should automatically win the season.

Ya know,
this may be the first time in my life that I wish Samson was talking to Rich & Tommy instead of Beinfest. David wouldn’t be shy at all with the juicy details of the trade rumors.
by GameFish on Jul 31, 2008 9:50 PM EDT 0 recs
That's for sure, though....
I don’t think Samson knows anything about the baseball operations part of the team but that wouldn’t keep him from spilling juicy details.

Paul Lo Duca
released from the Nats… my AAB for tonight… the Marlins sign him…
by jrsyeagle on Jul 31, 2008 11:50 PM EDT 0 recs
That would be great
I wouldn’t mind a reunion with Lo Duca. We don’t have tabloids here, so he should be fine.

Yay for the win!
As far as the Manny deal, I applaud management for having the balls to try to pull of such a crazy and game changing deal, and I applaud them even more for then not feeling like they had to deliver said deal at all costs. They stuck to their guns and didn’t allow the pressure to pull this off get in the way of making sure it was a fair deal. Personally, I thought it would of been awesome to have Manny in Miami, but I trust Beinfest and clearly he didnt think it was the right value.
