Sergio Mitre is out for the Season

And maybe more.  I think it was Jrsyeagle who first reported this in the comments yesterday.  Also, Mbaamin has a Fan Post on the subject you will want to checkout.

Sergio Mitre's season is done with his recent trip to Alabama.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre's season is over before it started.

Out since spring training with a forearm strain, Mitre underwent Tommy John surgery today. Dr. James Andrews, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the same procedure on Logan Kensing and Josh Johnson, took care of Mitre in his Birmingham, Ala. office.

---

...typical recovery and rehabilitation takes 12 to 18 months.

---

Mitre, who agreed to a $1.2 million contract and was penciled in as the No. 2 starter, will be arbitration-eligible for the second time after this season.

I guess it is possible the Marlins will re-sign him assuming the price is around the league minimum.

If not, Mitre will be rehabbing on his own in hopes of catching on with another club in the future.  It's very unfortunate for Sergio, the timing couldn't be worse.

on the bright side,

once Sanchez comes back and bumps Miller from the rotation, there wouldn’t be any spots left for Mitre anyway.

Of course, that’s excluding any injuries or Hendrickson-level flameouts, but hey, I’m trying to find the silver lining here.
