Mitre joins the Tommy John club

The Marlins website is reporting that Sergio Mitre underwent Tommy John surgery today. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews. This will keep Mitre out of action until the middle of the 2009 season.

With JJ and Volstad now in the rotation and Anibal on his way, we really don't need Mitre right now.

It will be interesting to see what direction the front office decides to go with Mitre. He will be arbitration eligible again at the end of the season. Our rotation is already looking good for next year without Mitre and Mitre wouldn't be able to pitch again until July at the earliest.

Any insight as to why it took so long to get this diagnosed? He’s been DL’ed for half a season.

I'm starting to wonder about the team's medical staff...

The Marlins had him in a throwing program then sent his medical records to Dr. Andrews for a consultation. When Dr. Andrews saw the records he told the Marlins to shut Mitre down immediately.

Bummer

Not exactly related, but how funny is the banner on the right for Tommy James ringtones?

If that’s one thing we can take away from Mitre’s surgery, so be it.
