Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Nationals at Marlins (6/30)
Washington Nationals at Florida Marlins, Jun 30, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
The Nationals, winner of three of their last four, are in town.
Tucker will be facing the Nationals for the first time. He last outing didn't go so good, to say the least, giving up 7 runs in just 4 innings. But these things happen when 21 year-old pitchers are hastened to the bigs. There is no doubt that Tucker has talent but much like the prize in Cracker Jack, you never know what you will get. (Do they still put prizes in Cracker Jack?)
Redding always goes 5 innings but very rarely more than 6. His last start was good one going 6 innings and only giving up 2 runs. He hasn't had a decision in his last 7 starts but the Nationals are 14-3 when he takes the mound.
I'm so completely out of time, but quickly: don't look for to Uggla to start any of the games in this series. If, and that is if, Amezaga plays in the field in the series it will be as an infielder and Andino will be used in the outfield.
A little Josh Johnson news:
Josh Johnson (right elbow) allowed five runs on 11 hits in 52/3 innings Sunday for Class AA Carolina. He walked one and struck out three. His next start could be Friday for the Marlins in Colorado.
Anyone else think they are rushing him back? And maybe a bit before he is ready?
Just asking.
I've gotta go.
Ichthyomany still hates Monday. Best of Luck to You!

hanley gets a double
I think they are def rushing jj back. They must be extremely cautious with him. However, if he’s pitching over 80 pitches in the minors it won’t hurt to bring him up and keep him on a limited count. He just won’t be able to gun it. I say let him get one or two starts before the break if the doctors say its ok so he’s raring to go and sufficiently recovered in a couple weeks.

aw, what the heck...
let’s try the bullpen AAB again:
Marlins BP: 3+ IP, 3+ pitchers used, 3+ K’s, less than 3 ER allowed.
As for Johnson, aren’t major-leaguers very often lousy in their rehab starts? Aren’t they usually just trying re-build stamina or work out the kinks?

Hey, I was just kidding.
See, that was a funny joke about changing the AAB.
Oh, what’s that? Willingham just homered? How fortunate that I changed my AAB back!

Josh Johnson, too fast
Putting Josh Johnson in the rotation this week doesn’t make sense, unless the Marlins plan to yank Hendrickson. Or unless they’re serious about a 6-man rotation.
Olsen and Nolasco obviously belong in the bigs, and Miller has earned his place in the rotation. Tucker has struggled at times, but I think he has pitched well enough to start at least through the All-Star break. It would be a mistake to send him down before then.
That leaves Hendrickson, who’s pretty much bottomed out as far as I can tell after his surprising start to the season. Of all the current starters, Hendrickson is the only one who clearly doesn’t fit in the Marlins future. And at this pace, I’m not sure he gives the team much of a chance to win the division this year.

Oh boy
Why Fredi doesn’t pinch hit for Treanor with 2 outs and the tying run on third is beyond me.
by Matt Wilson on Jun 30, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually...
Fredi’s crappy managing all-around is what lost this game.
Too long of a leash with the pitchers and not pinch hitting there.
