Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Phillies at Marlins (6/11)
Philadelphia @ Florida
The Marlins are going for the series win tonight and it should be a little of a challenge.
Miller, it is the same as it ever was. If he can control at least a couple of pitches, something he didn't do in his last three starts, he could impress. If it is another night of chunking it to the screen, the good news is: that type of pitch is impossible to hit out of the park, the bad news is: he won't be around very long.
Hamels is a very good pitcher, but the interesting thing is that the Marlins normally hit very well against him and especially at JRS. If Hamels gets up in the zone he can be tagged. If he is keeping every down, he can be tough. Hamels is a lefty.
Note about last night's auction: we were in the game until the end unlike last year when we were blown out of the water in the closing innings. The neat thing was when I was making our bids and I said I would like the board to read FishStripes (I didn't mention to them that the "S" capitalized) they said: "FishStripes, sure, no problem." And trust me that isn't how it worked in last year's auction when it was all I could do to try and get them to put our site's name on the board. Of course it ended up being posted as "Fish straps" and I considered that a success. But not this year, it was like they knew us. Who knows, maybe someone besides us knows we exist.
Hopefully, next year, the third time will be the charm.
Ichthyomancy is up and running. Best of Luck to You!

Ichthyomancy
I am an extremely avid and long-time reader of FishStripes. Extremely rare is the day that I don’t read it, and when I miss it a day for one reason or another, I make sure to read what I missed the following day. I don’t quite understand what Ichthyomancy is though. Can someone please explain? Thanks.

Icththyomancy
It’s a game in which we make three separate picks:
1. Game attendance – worth 1 point. Self-explanatory.
2. A player of the game – worth 1 point. There’s almost always more than one player awarded points for his performance in a game. For example, if Hanley hits a leadoff HR, Nolasco has a quality start and Cantu hits two doubles, Craig may award all three of them a point.
3. “Above and beyond”—an unusual or very specific pick for that game. You can get multiple points depending on how complex your pick is. For example, predicting that the Marlins pitchers strike out at least 10 Phillies is worth a point. Predicting they’ll strike out at least 10 Phillies and give up fewer than 2 runs may be worth 2 points, and so on. On the other hand, a very routine AAB pick may not receive a point at all, even if it happens (e.g., “Marlins aren’t no-hit”).
Hope that helps.

so
so, then basically the people who who make predictions for every game, as opposed to those who do it three times a week have the best shot of winning it all right? and people like me who may want to start playing now have a large disadvantage to the ones that have been playing all season and have no way of catching up, correct? what does the person with the most points at the end of the season get? thanks.

Ichthy--gotta love it!
Yes, making predictions for every game is a big advantage to being the season winner. However, a lot of the fun of Ichthyomancy is in the participation, however often that might be. It gives an added dimension to the enjoyment of watching the game—seeing if your predictions will come true. At the end of the season, the overall winner gets the title of “Ichthyomancy Champion” for the season and a token prize. Join in! It’s all good fun.

Indeed.
It might take some considerable prowess to catch the leaders a couple months into the season, but it’s still a lot of fun to play. And considering that there’s not a huge number of participants, you could still end up with a very strong showing.
It also makes those ugly losses a little more tolerable—as in, “We’re losing 11-3, but if Uggla hits another double, at least I might get a point out of this.”

AAB
The way to catch up if you started late is to make AAB picks that will garner multiple points like “Hopper No-Hitter” or “Hermida: Cycle and 3 assists” or “Fish: 1 triple play, 1 grand slam, 0 ER allowed, and 0 E” or “Fish 2 or less E.”

I started
about this time last season and finished close to the top – and I missed the last couple weeks of the season. It’s just about getting lucky and a little outrageous with your AABs

moving ridiculously fast. Through the first five innings in an hour!
Miller and Hamels are both on top of their game tonight. Lets hope it lasts (for Andrew).

Jaque Jones Gone
Robert Andino Back…. Craig Minervini just announced during post game….
I love walk offs, but I would have MUCH preferred a nice save… I think Gregg seems to pitch better when he gets the last out in the 8th!
Let’s get out the brooms….

Jacque Jones: huge bust or major bust?
At least we didn’t pay too much for him.
Wouldn’t you know I had to leave before the Marlins came up to bat in the 9th. Then again, maybe if I had stayed to watch, the slam wouldn’t have happened. Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, y’know.

Also…. Andrew Miller, our opening day ace for 2009. Book it.

i think my AAB was spot on because you missed the last part of the equation. my pick was uggla HRs (1) + hanley HRs(0) + hanley SBs(0) + uggla Ks(3)=4
1 + 3=4. so i think my pick hit.
thanks.
