Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Reds (5/14)
Florida @ Cincinnati
The NL East Leading Marlins are hoping right the ship and get back to their winning ways.
Nolasco will be looking to build on his start which was probably his best of the season. The keys will be, just like every Nolasco start, is if the curve ball and the splitter are working and if he can spot the fast ball he will be fine. He has the stuff but it will all come down to whether he has the command.
Arroyo, if I counted correctly, is going on three days rest. His last start was excellent against the Mets going 8 innings and giving up on 1 ER. But with the short rest and throwing 115 pitches last time out, he may not go much beyond the fifth tonight.
A Reds note: in last night's game when Keppinger fouled the ball off his knee, it broke his knee cap. Which has to be painful and maybe in more ways than one.
Ichthyomancy is kinda sorta ready. Good Luck!

AAB pick
The Marlins average for the year:
9.1 H/game
.95 E/game
3.9 BB allowed/game
.825 HR/game
Therefore with the averages plugged into the equation results in:
9.1 > 5.67
I think you know where I’m going, but I will count it.

It seems that Jacque Jones likes what the Fish have going on…
Jacque Jones, who was designated for assignment last week by the Detroit Tigers, has expressed interest in joining the Florida Marlins if he is not dealt to another team within the 10-day period the Tigers were given to trade or release the veteran outfielder, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.The Tigers would likely be on the hook for what’s left of his $5.5 million salary if they were to trade him to the Marlins.
I say, why not? First off, it doesn’t cost the Fish squat. It allows you to send Brett Carroll or Andino down to get playing time on a consistant basis and it gives you a proven veteran in the outfield who has been to the playoffs on 4 seperate occasions. I did some research and over the past 6 seasons and Jones has averaged (+ = just above):
.280 Avg
29 2B’s
+ 20 HR’s
+.760 OPSThe only thing that slipped with Jones last year were his HR and RBI totals. His strikeouts went from 117, 120, and 117 between 04-06 but dropped to 70 last year. His doubles rose from 21 in ‘06 to 33 in ‘07. The guy can still hit and demands respect at the plate. I think hes a valuable left handed bat that the Marlins could use in the lineup. He can hit leadoff (hell if Cody is, I’m sure Jones would fit fine) or be an effective 7-8 hitter at the bottom. I’m not sure about you guys but I feel incredibly comfortable with a Jacque Jones hitting 7 or 8 in our lineup.
The whole Tiger lineup has been struggling, and despite his low average, he's still on pace to strike out just under 100 times with a 500 AB season, well below his SO average per 500 AB's over the past 6 years. As the past has proved, it’s amazing what a change of scenery can do for a player. The fish don’t even have to look too far down there bench to see Hendrikson, Helms, Cantu, and Gonzo reaping the benefits.

How the F
do you let a guy throw 8 freaking balls in a row in the 10th inning?
Oh well, let’s hope we don’t get the bad end of a 4 game sweep….

because,
he was going to hit in the next inning (i think he was up 2nd or 3rd), so I assume Fredi didn’t want to use up another pitcher to get one out.
