Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Dodgers at Marlins (5/1)
Los Angeles Dodgers at Florida Marlins, May 1, 2008 12:10 PM EDT
The NL East Leading Marlins find themselves in sweep avoidance mode for the first time this season. In fact, the Marlins haven't lost three games in-a-row all season.
The Hopper will take the hill in his first start against the Dodgers ever. Burke needs to get his sinker working and keep it low in the zone. If he can do that, and his friends behind play the field properly, he should do reasonably well. And then when the bullpen enters the game, and they will, there needs to be no repeats of last night.
This is Kuroda's first season in the majors and obviously his first start against the Marlins. So far this season lefties are having the best luck against him. He averages about a strikeout every other inning but is known, on occasion, to give up the long ball.
The bad news is that this is a weekday day game and it isn't on television. So unless you are going to park, you aren't going to see it.
The good new is the start time is really going to mess with the Dodgers internal clock. They will arrive at the park at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time and the game will start at 9:10 a.m. their time. Baseball players are creatures of the night and are set in their routines. While the weekday day game will mess with the Marlins, it should really mess with the Dodgers -- or at least that is my hope.
Ichthyomancy is still hating day games but is ready for your picks. And as always, Good Luck!

Workers Unite!
It’s still a school day today right? Is Mayday a bigger holiday than I thought? Maybe the Marlins can wear red uniforms and put a maypole in the outfield..
Who in their right mind schedules a game like this?

I just realized the game already started…
wondering if I can change my AAB to “Marlins score 5 in the 6th inning”

Hanley...
Apparently tweaked his hamstring on his first AB…
He still turned a sick play in the field, I recommend you go to MLB.com’s Gameday and check out the video.

Walks
It really really really concerns me that this team cannot work any at bats into walks. Good things happen when you get walks. Pitchers get flustered, their pitch counts go up, and obviously its free men on base. Fredi has got to do something about this.
BTW, 2-5 hitters really looking good today. Jesus we need Josh and Jake back.

Gregg
It’s time Gregg is removed from the closer’s role. He has shown me absolutely nothing this season. He always get walks and that is cardinal rule number 1 when you are a closer. Unacceptable.

Maybe...
If he smoked, chewed, or dipped he could stop handing out free passes which turn into runs. He may “care” about tobacco-free Florida but he doesn’t care about blowing chances for his team.
Ugh, if Lindstrom could develop a stronger slider he would be a solid closer. Pinto’s got the stuff, but he walks his fair share as well.

Just remember, kids...
smoking, chewing and dipping helps relax you and makes you a better baseball player!

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this. I was hoping J.Miller might get the chance though.

God Gregg's commercial is hilarious...
It does seem like Lindstrom would be a great closer, but his only real good pitch right now is the heat, and that seems to get hit pretty bad too. Owens I think is the ideal closer, but I would be absolutely fine with Justin right now. Closer’s need tats.

Swept by the mediocre Dodgers...blech.
And attendance of 15,000 for a Thursday afternoon game? That’s one of the better weekday crowds this year. Why do I get the feeling that many (most?) of those were giveaways to kids.
I hope Henry Owens gets healthy soon. I thought he would’ve been a really good closer had he not gotten hurt. (Get yer act together, Gregg!)
