Derek Lowe vs Andrew Miller

The NL East Leading Marlins welcome the Dodgers to town for a three game set.

Miller is going to endeavor to try and find his control.  His last outing he got his first win of the season and that is a good thing.  But he played with fire all throughout the game and that is not.  Hopefully, the young Mr. Miller is learning as he goes.

Lowe had some elbow tightness in his last start.  I don't know whether or not it will have a linger effect, though he hasn't pitched more than 5 innings in his last two starts.  Lefties, so far this season, have hit him pretty hard.

Ichthyomancy is ready to kick it into gear.  So get your prognostications ready and Good Luck!

I am kinda expecting a slightly bigger crowd. I figure having Joe Torre as the manager for the dodgers would lure some of the yankee fans down here.

How long can we keep parading Miller out there?

If the Giants can demote Zito, whom I feel is a better pitcher than Miller will ever be, how can we in good faith keep running him out to the mound every fifth day? Send him down to get some work or something, this is unreasonable.

by Bumppo on Apr 29, 2008 7:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he needs to go

It’s embarassing to the team and front office to force him out there week after week. If McPherson and Maybin can work out their growing pains in the minors, he should to. The rest of the team is performing. He is not. He should go for the sake of the team… and his name, is dan uggla.

Ironic comment...

Picked a bad night to say something negative about Uggla. Home run and web gem of the year.

wasn't

saying something negative about dan uggla… he hit the home run while i was posting and that is the announcers catch phrase

I'd take Barone or Seddon at this point...

Bring up Volstad for a try if you have to.

Miller

Ok, maybe I’m going out on a limb, but why not Waechter as the starter? I understand he’s a reliever but he just went 4 shut out innings on a lineup that put up 6 runs already in the game. His stuff looked exponentially better than Miller’s.
And GD!! Hanley needs to stop getting picked off, it’s just a waste of two fricken outs.

by GMFB on Apr 29, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure of the accuracy of this (and I’m not about to look it up) but my friend who is a Rays fan said Waechter used to play for them and he was a starter. I don’t see any reason why the Marlins can’t do the same.

by FSUMarlins on Apr 30, 2008 1:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Waechter

Not sure about the Rays but Waechter was starting in AAA and having success. There is no reason he couldn’t take over in the rotation.

Another option would be to leave Waechter as the long reliever and flip Miller and Volstad. While Miller was struggling today, Volstad was cruising; striking out 8 guys while giving up only 1 run on 4 singles in 7 innings. That is Volstad second straight outstanding outing (not that he has had a truly bad one yet). The previous outing even prompted the opposing teams manager to say that Volstad was “in the wrong league”.

One more thing

Has anyone seen these anti tobacco ads? All the guys look and sound good, save for one, Kevin Gregg. You can clearly see and hear him reading the cue cards. Its ridiculous, he sounds like a retarded child. You’d think the marketing team would think twice about putting that ad on tv after hearing the way his came out. It is kinda comical though.

That's because

he was saving his really good stuff for 2008. It’s reverse-psychology!

At game tonight...

About as much fun as you can have at a loss…A little tricky picking a highlight, but probably the Hermida to Uggla to Rabelo block of home plate collision was the best play of the night. I especially loved Rabelo spiking the ball before trotting to the dugout. Of course Uggla’s catch was amazing…D. Jeter can learn a thing about diving into the crowd from our Danny. Don’t forget Amezaga’s Swaboda-esque dive in center saving a run. Great hitting all around, but Cantu tonight was a revelation. He really has a nice swing and plenty of pop in his bat…his fielding needs help. Also Uggla, Hermida and Amezega need to get some kind of a system over who is going to catch pop ups in the shallow outfield…that was a four run mistake.
If Miller has major league talent he needs to go down to the minors before his confidence is permanently destroyed. He had a few bad breaks between weakly hit balls dropping and some bad fielding, but he looks like he doesn’t want to be out on the mound. His at bat was one of the lamest I’ve seen ever, anyone reading this could do no worse, and I think further displays an over all lack of confidence.
The crowd tonight was sparse and made sparser still by a light rain that fell for a few innings. But they were enthusiastic, happy and over all a good group. Fortunately only a few Dodger fans were on hand. Gregg allowed in a big run at the end, but over all I was pleased with a great effort from the Marlins.
