Game Today

The Marlins will play two games today, but only one will be official.

The official one is against Baltimore in Jupiter.

The Marlins starting pitcher is Ricky Nolasco.

The Orioles will send Adam Loewen to the hill.

Game time is 1:05 p.m.

The other game is an intrasquad game on one of the back fields at the complex.  The intrasquad game will begin at 11:30 a.m.  The game will feature the following pitchers and everyone else who isn't playing in the main game.

The pitchers in the intrasquad game include:

Mark Hendrickson, Kevin Gregg, Matt Lindstrom and Lee Gardner.

But back to the game against Baltimore, here is the Magic Updating Box and Gameday, I hope.

Some notes from the game
I tried to make it to the intrasquad and actual game today. I caught the tail end of the intrasquad game, and the first half of the O's game. It was a busy day, but I tried to make some observations as best I could.
In the intrasquad game, Lindstrom's control wasn't the greatest. I don't want to say he was wild, but he was missing bad. His pitches were all over and most didn't get near the strikezone.
Hendrickson looked much better. His pitches were all near the strikezone, and even when he missed, it wasn't by much.
Nolasco looked good out there the first three innings, but seemed to really run out of steam in the 4th. To be fair the defense missed some plays that could've gotten him out of trouble.
Cantu, for example, was good at the plate, but missed a ball hit down the line he should've snagged.
Uggla also just missed a ball that could've started a double play. Hermida got to it in the outfield, and made a perfect throw home- Rabelo would've tagged the runner out... if Jacob's hadn't cut it off.
Hermida's home run was a no doubter- he crushed it, and even against the wind, you knew it was gone.
A final note- Maybin got an infield single, and barely beat the throw at first. I'm not saying I don't love his hustle, but I don't need him pulling his hammy over a meaningless game.
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)

First round of cuts
The Marlins roster in major league spring training is now down to 60. Here's the list of cuts.

Optioned RHP Jesus Delgado to Double-A Carolina; Released OF Jorge Piedra; Reassigned RHP Marcos Carvajal, RHP Tim Corcoran, LHP Chris Seddon, RHP Dallas Trahern, C Brad Davis, C Chris Hatcher, INF Lee Mitchell, INF Rex Rundgren, INF Gabriel Sanchez to Minor League camp.

This may be a dumb question...
but what is the difference at this point in the spring between optioning a player to a minor league club (as they did with Delgado) and just reassigning him to the minor league camp?
Yes, I have a prospect fetish. That's why I'm a Marlins fan.

Answer to your question
The difference is in their roster status. If a guy is on the 40-man roster and has not reached three years of major league service time, he has options that can be used. In Delgado's situation, he is on the 40-man roster and does not have 3 years of major league service time so the team optioned him down to the minors.

The guys that were "reassigned" to the minors are not on the 40-man roster.

Simply put, guys getting optioned down are on the 40-man roster and those getting reassigned are not.
