Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Alejandro De Aza on the DL

As Mbaamin reported in the comments yesterday, De Aza is on the DL.

De Aza has a high ankle sprain and is out four to six weeks. He was placed on the DL today and recalled infielder Robert Andino. They also reassigned outfielder Alexis Gomez to Minor League camp. Interesting move. I hear now that Ross will platoon in center with Amezaga.

This is a very interesting move and bringing up Andino does mean the club plans to use Amezaga as a platoon center fielder for the first part of season.  This is very curious to me since the Marlins recalled Brett Carroll earlier, a move I highly support, to play the outfield.  On the surface this means that the franchise believes that Louis Gonzalez can't handle the everyday duties in right and therefore needs Carroll to spell him until Hermida is ready to go.  There is little doubt that Carroll is a better outfielder than Amezaga, which would lead me to believe that when Hermida returns, possibly as early as Saturday, that Andino will be sent to Albuquerque and Carroll will handle the center field platoon.

If Cody wasn't a little bit gimpy, I would be hard pressed to understand why the Marlins feel the need to platoon in center in the first place.  But he is and it may be necessary at the start of season to ensure he stays healthy throughout.
