Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

LCS Open Thread and Ichthyomancy (Day Eight)

One League Championship Series down -- One to go.

The Red Sox will be trying to find some way to quite the Rays bats and keep the series alive.  The Rays have the pennant  on their minds.

The only game: Rays (Kazmir) at Red Sox (Matsuzaka), 8:07 p.m.

In case you are wondering why Kazmir was moved ahead of Shields in the rotation, it has to do with the fact that Shields has basically sucked at Fenway this season and Kazmir hasn't.  Kazmir will be going on normal rest.

Matsuzaka won the only game for Boston in this series.  He pitched well in that game but the Rays had people all over the bases but couldn't bring them home.  While Dice-K normally strikeouts a bunch of hitters , he also has been known to walk more than his fair share.

Best of Luck to You!

Dumbest postseason "analysis":

ESPN Radio’s Jason Smith said that the Sox are losing because the Rays “want it more.”

That’s really mind-blowing stuff, Jason. I’m sure the Red Sox hold player-only meetings that go as follows:

Player 1: Guys, we’re down 3-1. Do we want to win this thing?
Player 2: Well, sure, I guess we want it.
Player 3: Yeah, I mean, if it all works out, that would be cool. If not, you know, whatever.
Player 4. To tell you the truth, I only sort of want it.
Player 5: Me, too. In fact, if I had to put a number on it, I’m only at about 45% wanting it.

It reminds me of last year’s Dolphins-Patriots game, in which Randy Moss and some third-string injury-replacement Dolphins safety both went up for a ball in the endzone, but Moss came down with it. The schmuck covering the game on TV stated that Moss came down with it because he wanted it more.

Obviously, it had nothing to do with Moss being, y’know, a better player. No, he just out-wanted the other guy. I hope everyone is paying attention…imagine what this means in your daily life. Tired of your low-level job? Then want that promotion and it’ll happen! Having trouble paying your bills? Then you better want to win the lottery!

They actually pay people to say these things.

(And don’t even get me started on every ex-jock football player on TV constantly saying the whole word “football” because they think it sounds more serious: “The Steelers are an excellent football team. They’re playing good football, and they know how to run the football. You won’t see them fumbling the football” etc., etc., etc.)

After spending the last 4 years of my life in Boston

I initially started to like the Red Sox (nevermore than the marlins, but as an AL team). Spend a day watching the Red Sox, Patriots or Celtics in a bar in Boston. It will come near impossible for you to like them. They have the strangest mix of the worlds most passionate fans (read: everything that goes against them causes a tremendous uproar and complaining) and the worlds largest collection of bandwagon fans. Seriously, they make the rayhawk thing look nonexistent – people wear caps, shirts, get in arguments about the team and have no clue what they’re rooting for or representing; it’s become stylish or trendy to support the team.

It begs the question… Rays Phillies world series… do you support the other florida team, the rays, or arguably the marlins biggest rival, the wretched phillies? I guess you could compare that to a FSU (state team) vs. VaTech (big east/acc rival) championship game…

well,

my mom’s from Springfield, Mass., so my earliest foray into baseball fandom was for the Red Sox, long before we had the Marlins. So in the AL, I’m usually pulling for the Sox.

As for the Series, I’ll go with Philadelphia. That city rarely wins anything. Tampa at least has a Super Bowl and a Stanley Cup this decade. And really, I’m getting Rays overload. Too much, too soon with them. If I have to hear about how unconventional Joe Maddon is one more time, i’m going to vomit.

For the record,

at 12:12 a.m., they mentioned how unconventional Joe Maddon is. Vomit to follow.

Oh wow,

How nice of David Ortiz to make an appearance nine games into the postseason.

Haha...

did you see that sign a fan was holding? “I like baseball.”

whew...

10 pitches already for Crisp.

terrible baserunning to end the inning, though.

unless,

Crisp was supposed to try for 2 in order to discourage a throw home.

by Fishcrazy on Oct 16, 2008 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure he thought the throw would go to the plate....

little did he know that Gross was going to uncork one the crappiest throws of all time and therefore had to be cut to keep it from going into the dugout.

Somewhere, Jeremy Hermida is smiling.

and also missing the garbage can with his empties by 5 feet.

LOL

When I saw that throw I thought of Jeremy

whoa...

I just had total flashbacks of Cantu throwing errantly and Jacobs muffing catches in the late innings of close games.

Want

Dare I say, the Sox wanted it more tonight?

Build a stadium downtown and I'll buy season tickets

by hurricane on Oct 17, 2008 12:17 AM EDT reply actions

Definitely.

There was a notable deficit in wanting. I expect that Joe Maddon will have the Rays out early tomorrow working on their want. He’s unconventional like that.

by Fishcrazy on Oct 17, 2008 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

pretty amazing..

they were simply dead going into the 7th. Even when they got 4 in the 7th, I was happy that they’d at least make it a respectable loss. Great comeback.
