Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Mets (9/29)

The Marlins are getting this spoiler thing down.  After last night's game the Mets have to hope, beyond all hopes, that they can win this game and next one and that the Phillies will lose two in a row.  Which will only guarantee that the Mets will get to play a playoff game on Monday.

The Marlins starting pitcher is Chris Seddon.

The Mets plan to trot out to the hill. John Maine.

Game time is 1:10 p.m.

Seddon is a lefty who proved to be problematic to the Mets the last time he faced them.  In that outing, he only gave up 3 H and 2 ER in 5 IP.  The only down side in the start came on Lo Duca's 2-run home run.

Maine appears to be wearing down as the season goes on.  But his last start against the Marlin wasn't all that bad.  He only gave up 3 ER in 5 IP but did strikeout 9.

For all things Mets, check out Amazin' Avenue.

Ichhtyomancy, while still hating day games, is more than ready to meet the challenge.

Here's today's Ichthyomancy pick table:

Beinfest extended
According to "sources", GM Larry Beinfest, Assistant GM's Michael Hill and Jim Fleming and Vice President of Player Personnel Dan Jennings have had their contracts extended through 2015. The contracts are expected to be announced officially this afternoon.

Just saw that on ESPN.
It's definitely great news. You'd think someone of Beinfest's talents would be pursuing other opportunities, but I sure am delighted he'll be here for a while. Given our, uh, "restrictions," imagine how bad we'd be without the deft work of our scouting and personnel department.

And how 'bout them FISH?!? Four in a row and we have those wretched Mets peeing their pants. I hate the Phillies, but I hate the Mets more. At least we don't get 20,000 Phillies fans showing up at Dolphins Stadium or whining on message boards. New York sports fans are the absolute worst.

On the pre-game
interview w/ Beinfest they said he was now president of baseball opperations and Michael Hill is now the GM

It's up on the Marlins page
It's now in the press release section of the Marlins homepage. "The Florida Marlins today announced the extension of the contracts of four baseball executives through the 2015 season: Larry Beinfest, who was named President, Baseball Operations; Michael Hill who was named Vice President, General Manager; Dan Jennings who was named Vice President, Player Personnel and Assistant General Manager; and Jim Fleming, Vice President, Player Development and Scouting and Assistant General Manager. The announcement was made by Marlins Owner and CEO Jeffrey H. Loria."

Not sure
I was wondering that myself.

Presumably
Samson will just take an additive title like President of Business Operations, to complement Beinfest's.

Samson=Nepotism
And while I'm not a black man, I love the fact that Michael Hill is our GM!

Elimination day
Hey, I just realized that the Marlins can completely eliminate the Mets from the playoffs today -- a Fla win plus a Phillie win leaves the Mets wondering if anyone got the license number of the bus that rolled over them the last three weeks.  A Marlin win on it's own accord eliminates the Mets from Wild Card consideration.

If the Mets complete their surprising collapse this weekend and completely miss the playoffs after leading the division by 7 games with 17 to play, the fallout in the Big Apple could be of epic proportions and will be the lead story through the off-season.

And the long-time Phillie phans will know exactly how the Mets pheel.

I'm actually cheering for the Nats today.
Going to Sunday's game, and I want some drama.

Points
The attendance for the game was 54,675.  The attendance point goes to Fluxuation.

It was a blowout and normally no Player of the Game points are awarded but today there is an exception:  Player of the Game -- Paul Hoover.

Unfortunately no one choose Hoover.

AAB points: Unsurprisingly no one's pick came true.

Recap:

Fluxuation +1

Congratulations to Fluxuation!  If I missed anyone or anything, please let me know.
