Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Nationals (4/4)

The Marlins are going for the sweep today.  The only time in the team's history they have ever started the season 3-0 was in 1997.  Since the organization is honoring the ten year anniversary our first World Series win this year, it would only be appropriate to begin the season in like fashion.

The starting pitcher for the Marlins is Anibal Sanchez.

The Nationals will send Matt Chico to the hill in his major league debut.

Game time is at the very unfortunate time of 1:05 p.m.

I don't know what it is about the Nationals and their love of day games, especially on weekdays.  And don't try to sell me on this being a "get away game".  The Fish have an off-day on Thursday. But leaving that be and on to other matters.

Dontrelle has sort of taken Anibal under his wing in order to prevent him from having a second year slump.

Part of the problem, Willis said, was that he was guilty of overthinking, trying to make fine adjustments instead of relying on his natural abilities.

He said he doubts Sanchez will fall victim to the same sophomore slide.

'I told him, `Just keep having fun, keep enjoying the game,' '' Willis said.

Chico is a lefty who put up pretty decent numbers in Double-A last year.  What I do know about him is that he flunked out of USC and then a junior college before landing in the pros.  I guess he is more of a baseball player than a student.

Ichtyomancy is front and center.  It is a day game so be sure to get your picks in on time.

Here's today's Ichthyomancy pick table:

Looking for a good excuse to leave work.
But it has to sound good, at least to the boss.
Does anyone have any good ideas?

What could be a better excuse than that?

It didn't work
Best decision the boss has made all year. Listened to the game on the radio and that was bad enough. Anibal just lost it, but Julio seems contemptibly inadequate.

Bring on the Home Opener!

julio!
so i can only follow the game on gamecast, but if julio is actually doing as bad as it appears, then, well, i'm not a fan of him.

If Jorge did this against the Nats
I would hate to see him against the Mets.

Good to see the . .
Marlin bullpen pickup where they left off last year.  Julio 7 batters faced, 6 baserunners, 1 out.  We desperately needed him huh?

On a serious note, these are the games that everybody forgets about in a long 162 game season, but are the difference between contending and losing 90 games.  A 5-run lead at the end of 5, a 2-run lead into the 9th and we can't hold onto it.  Completely inexcusable.

by DoubleB on Apr 4, 2007 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

frustrating indeed
DoubleB, let's not forget that Julio's only out made was on a sacrifice bunt.  I also totally concur with you on the importance of these losses.  Granted, you should expect it a couple times in a season, but hopefully not against a team like Washington.

But oh well, given Julio's track record, we've got, what, 4 appearances before this happens again?  I didn't want this amount of frustration this early in the season, and I think it will persist until Owens/Tankersly is the closer and we have Petit back on our roster.  Maybe I should try to not be quite so negative about this, though.

My roommate
Thought the string of expletives that left my mouth after Julio came in was funny.

I didn't.

Oh well, it's just one game, hopefully Julio gets shipped out of town real soon like.
