Quick Poll

I hope everyone's been reading up on the Marlins Centerfield Battle, or MCB, because it's Pop Quiz time!

The MCB has six possible answers, none of which may be right! So, depending on how you look at it, this is either the easiest or the hardest test question in your life!

Yo Maverick, can you tell us about Borchard and Ross's defense abilities, or lack thereof?

Defense
Borchard has actually looked really good out in CF, and we all know about his strong arm.

Cody has less speed than most, but he has good instincts. You can get by with him a few starts a month in CF and he won't hurt you.

the Herald this morning
has Eric Reed in the lead, followed by...Alex Sanchez? Sanchez is held in such low regard around here that I forgot to even include him in this poll.

If Reed can hit, then he's a great addition. But lets not forgot, Reggie Abercrombie looked like an all-star last spring, and we all know how that turned out. So I dont think Reed can sustain any offensive productivity in the majors.

I voted for Joe Borchard, because he has the potential to hit and play some D. The next most appealing option for me is the youngster De Aza, but I dont think he's gonna make it.

Is Eric Reed our opening day centerfielder?

I can't believe Mike doesn't remember Ocala - he was having a GREAT time!

Punch and Judy
I personally think that PJ aka Eric Reed gets the nod Opening Day. He is a .300 hitter in the minors and he is a pretty good defensive player. De Aza needs another year, no need to rush him. Joe Borchard is my pick too, but management is being stubborn with him.

To be fair...
...there's every reason to think that .300 average is more about the park than his talents.  I mean, come on... a .352/.241 home/road split is not luck.  Especially considering Albequerque's near-unmatched park factor for hits.  It's like being a .300 hitter for the Rockies -- in terms of what it says for true talent level, it's really not all that great.

and I don't like PJ at all but...
he has hit over .300 everywhere save for one .255 stint in Carolina in 2005.

Borchard
I caught a game on MLB.tv and I have to second the opinion that Borchard looks surprisingly competent out there.

Not gonna be an all star, but will definitely perform at league-average or better defensively, and if that gets his bat in the lineup, good deal!
