Ah, Benitez

The story that just won't quit.

Embattled closer Armando Benitez has told teammates that he wants a change of scenery, but Sabean said it's unlikely the club would trade him until he proves his health by throwing off a mound.

---

The Giants have talked with Florida Marlins officials, who would welcome back Benitez and even take $1 million to $2 million of his $7.6 million salary. According to an industry source, Florida would consider giving up young right-hander Yusmeiro Petit.

Assuming he can throw off the mound with some success, i.e. he regains most of his projected velocity and his off-speed pitch is about to up to par for him.  I don't have a problem with the Marlins spending a $1 million or so bucks on the chance that he might regain his 2004 form.  I don't think it will happen but, hey, it's not my money.  However, to include Petit in the deal is just plain wrong.  If the Marlins are looking to trade Petit, and I think they will eventually, the organization can do a lot better than wasting that asset on the pipe dream that is Benitez.

Can't help but wonder if somehow the brass has soured on Petit.  He keeps coming up in these rumors...or maybe it's just people putting words in the mouths of others, I guess.  But the name does keep popping up.
