Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Brewers at Marlins (8/28)

The Marlins are going for eight in a row.  They also looking to make Fishfan prophetic with the sweep.

The starting pitcher for the Marlins is Josh Johnson.  The Brewers have on tap Ben Sheets.

Game time is 7:05 p.m.

The Fish won Johnson's last three starts.  It has been awhile since he has logged a win at home (June 26).  If he can keep the ball in the park he should be fine.

Sheets had a nice last outing at home against the Rockies.  But he has had some trouble in away games at night.  He has averaged over a strikeout per inning since coming off the DL in July.

Ichthyomancy is ready for game four of 20 games in 20 days.  Don't forget to get your picks in on time.

Here's today's Ichthyomancy pick table:

What do you think our rotation is next season?
Just another random thought; what do you see our rotation looking like next year?

DTrain
JJ
Ollie
Anibal
(Mohler?)

Or do you think Vargas turns things around in the off-season?  Any ideas what caused his problems this season?  Some nagging injury maybe..

You've forgotten someone
The other wonder-rook, Ricky Nolasco.

im an idiot
ah goodness, you're right.  must have had a brain-freeze on that one.  well that's quite the rotation if you ask me.  in another year of seasoning, i think these guys will hit their strides better than our trio of beck, burnett, and penny back in the day.

rock on

Okay
I haven't been this excited in a long time. I wasn't this excited for the Heat. I love Marlins baseball more than just about anything. Today, really, has been one of the greatest days of my life.
Jsprt and I have been doing some statistical analysis of the Marlins, and here's what we've come up with...
Since being 11-33, the Marlins have climbed to 64-66. That's a 53-33 record, 20 games over .500, and a .616 win percentage.
The Marlins have 32 games left. If they continue to play at their .616 clip, then they will finish the season with 20 more wins and 12 more losses. That would put us at 84-78, one game better than last year's team, I believe.
I don't like to deal with the .492 season win percentage, because of those first 44 games. But even then, we'd finish 80-82, very respectable.
The Reds, at their .511 season percentage, are only on pace to go 83-79. However, they're fading fast. The Phillies, Giants and Padres are all anomolies, but at their current win percentages, they wouldn't win as many games as us. The Phillies have been slipping (but added Niner), the Giants are fairly hot, and the Padres, I believe are playing fairly consistently.
I believe that if the Marlins can keep this up, they will win the wild card. And I will be there for the games, as I have been during the regular season.
An aside, 87% of SportsNation says that Loria would have no grounds for firing Girardi after the season. Here's to hoping he doesn't.

One more thing
If we made the playoffs, could you imagine how sick our pitching would be? Willis, Johnson, Olsen and Sanchez, with Moehler, Nolasco, Meitre, Tankersly and Borowski coming out of the pen? Sick.

Relief?
I love the starting pitching and the long relief potential, but the late innings group is marginal at best.  How bad do you think this team wants those four games against the Braves and Rays in late May back that they blew in the 9th inning?

All that being said, this isn't a team people would want to face in October.  Young, confident, nothing to lose attitude.  I'd love to see a 7 game series versus the Mets for the pennant.

i'm going to punch every single person that said the marlins were going to be garbage this year in the face.
