A quick study in contrast at the trade deadline
Or... "why we should love our owndership."
Today was the deadline for trades in the MLB, in case you hadn't heard. Looks like many teams were busy, while others (like the Florida Marlins) were relatively quiet.
Why the lack of activity on the part of the Fish? It's because we're doing nearly everything right, and there is no need to change our strategy at this point. Now, compare that to the Phillies.
They've had to gut their team, even though they are ahead of us in the standings. By being conservative this year, and knowing ourselves, we are not "buyers" or "sellers" but instead in the position of accepting a trade if it's in our favor, but not having to force one to save money or suddenly fill a hole to compete.
These guys do a great job, even if they infuriate me.

Marlin GM's . .
These guys get it. The reality of baseball economics is that all but a handful of teams have windows in which to accomplish their goals. The Marlin window ran from 03-05 and then it was time to start again. What's the point of winning 70-80 games every year and getting nowhere? Gut the team, get everything you can, and build up to a new window.

A different angle on trade deadline
Think about this. Have the Marlins really been using this potential advantage against their opponents?? ;-)
Or another, less felonious angle; in that TWIB feature on Saturday, several of the Guppies were seen hitting the town after a day game, in a limo. At first one might think "how hoity-toity" or some such; Logan Kensing, Josh Johnson et al don't seem like limo types. But today's news makes one think "smart move, guys; keep that limo driver on retainer." Limos for the entire roster, just don't get in a taxi.

Borowski
Quote:
The Marlins have no compelling reason to move Borowski. He's payroll-friendly at $327,000 plus $1 million in incentives, and he's a great late-inning security blanket for Florida's dynamic young rotation.
Larry Beinfest and his group have done a phenomenal job of building a competitive club on a $14 million payroll. The last thing they want to do is throw the ninth inning into disarray in August and September and resurrect the first month of the season, when the Marlins blew a ton of leads.
Still, Borowski could be a nice fit for a contender looking for a solid setup man. He's a tough-minded veteran who wouldn't be fazed by the prospect of pitching in a race. That's why the Marlins won't move him unless they can get something of long-term value in return.
"We love Joe," said Dan Jennings, Florida's vice president of player personnel. "We don't look at him as just an older guy on a young club. He's very valuable to us and what we're doing. He keeps the pressure off the kids at the end of the game."
