Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Giants (6/5)

The team fresh from getting a sweep are now off on their West Coast trip. First stop: San Francisco.  I have only been to San Francisco just a few times in my life but I have found it to be a very beautiful city.

Enough of that.

The Marlins starting pitcher is Big Moe.  The Giants will send Noah Lowry to the hill.

Game time is 10:15 p.m.

Big Moe has been hot of late and hopefully that streak will continue.

The Marlins have seen Lowry before and his last start against the Fish was far from stellar.  Lowry tends to attempt to pitch down and away to right-handers and down and in to left-handers.

If you get a chance during the game, check out the Open Thread at McCovey Chronicles. It can be quite humorous.

Ichthyomancy is ready and I hope you are too.  Be sure to get your picks in on time.  Given that we are on the West Coast there shouldn't be much of a reason not too.

Here's today's Ichthyomancy pick table:

Tonight's Picks
26,335
Big Moe
The Pitching Sucks Special: Both teams relievers combine for 6 innings pitched or more.

Don't asked why I picked Moehler as the Player of the Game if I am thinking that the pitching sucks.

Go Yankees -Scott

by MarlinsDraft06 on Jun 5, 2006 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

You can have that many relievers...
without the pitchers sucking.

The Marlins used 5 relievers in Sunday's game and not one of them sucked.

by craig on Jun 5, 2006 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Moreover...
You could have that many relief innings with both starters getting Quality Starts.

And that's not even getting into extra inning games like that Pedro/Webb 1-0 duel...

I'll be on the watch out for the sign
If for reason I get called away from the game, I will sift you pick to hold one.

If anybody else sees it, please let me know.  My feed for tonight is FSN Bay Area so I'm guessing they won't show it but they might on FSN Florida.

Hello Marlins fans.
Just popped over from McCovey Chronicles. I just have two quick questions:

How many wins will the Marlins get in 2007?
How many wins will they get in 2008?

(I say 71 and 87 ... I'd guessed 69 this year.)

Thank you for indulging me.

by lyricalkiller on Jun 5, 2006 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks for dropping in
If I knew the exact answers to your question, I would go to Vegas.

But if I had to guess: 74 and 85

Ross
is going to be logging some serious time in the whirlpool after the game.

Will do
be sure to come back.

I hoping to catch the show at 1:30 showing after the game.

Oh well
wasted another Olivo leadoff single

by craig on Jun 5, 2006 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah Lowry
go run the bases for awhile.  It's good for you.

by craig on Jun 5, 2006 11:42 PM EDT reply actions

After that inning
it will be a little more of a challenge to win the game.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Good thing ...
we didn't let the Giants rest up by staying out in the field.

Now, they have to immediately go back to swinging the bats.

Sort of a Rope a Dope strategy, I presume.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

Things like this...
...are why I come check here during games like this.  Your optimism keeps me smiling.

their arms were tired from swinging.

Bringing them to their knees
after this up coming inning they won't be able to lift their arms.

No rest for them

So, Craig --
Are you a west coaster? Or awake at 12:30 a.m.?

by lyricalkiller on Jun 6, 2006 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

No
But I wouldn't mind being one.

I live in the Central time zone.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's the story
I had moved from Houston and could no longer watch the Astros due to MLB restrictions so I needed a team to watch.

The Marlins had just dismantled the 1997 team and I decided I wanted to follow the team grow.

I started watching the Marlins and became a fan.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

And now...
...you get to do it again. At least this time they did it with a bit of smarts. Some of these guys look like they're going to be good, and quick.

by lyricalkiller on Jun 6, 2006 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah get to again
Not sure I wanted to but no one asked me.

I agree with you.  The dismantling of 2005 team was done much smarter than last time.

The Marlins won't be cellar dwellers for long.  My long term concern is that 6 years down the road all of the young guys will be free agents in the same year.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm starting to think
the strategy is to wear them out the first game and then take the other two games.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

is going to get to do mop up duty.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:44 AM EDT reply actions

Borchard
since when did they quit calling the neighborhood play.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:48 AM EDT reply actions

We're set up
The Giants could barely high five after the game.

by craig on Jun 6, 2006 12:56 AM EDT reply actions

I'm thinking...
...we should have implemented this strategy tomorrow rather than today, what with the day-after-night Wednesday.

Then again, with Dontrelle's history in front of his "home" crowd, we may actually be trying to make them SUPER tired for his start.

by dan 2.0 on Jun 6, 2006 1:05 AM EDT reply actions

Never again
Will I watch the 100th episode of The Colbert Roport if this is what happens.

Points
The attendance for the game was 35,438.  That attendance point goes to C60.

That my friends was a blowout and no player points are awarded in a blowout.

AAB points: Colombo was the only one to his pick.

Recap:

C60 +1
Colombo +1

Congratulations to tonight's winners!  If I missed anyone or anything please let me know.
