Game Today

Play Ball!

The Marlins start their exhibition season today against the University of Miami.

Starting on the hill for the Marlins will be Jason Vargas.  His mound opponent will be UM junior Ricky Orta.  The young Mr. Orta is 1-1 on the season with a 3.60 ERA and is holding opponents to a team-low .176 average.

If everyone remembers last year's game, this will be by no means a gimme.  The Hurricanes are nationally ranked and are one of the premier college baseball programs in the country.

If you are fortunate enough to have a chance to go out to Roger Dean Stadium today, the game starts at 3:05 p.m.

Consider this a game open thread.

Canes
Miami is down a bit this year (9-6 so far). If they finish in the top 5 in the ACC it will be something of an accomplishment. The Canes are young.

But, as Dontrelle Willis would tell you, this ain't no junior college, "this is the notorious University of Miami."

If you get to see any of the action, check out the Canes Jon Jay. He can flat out hit. Also, Jemile Weeks (true freshman) starts at second base; he's the brother of Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks.

Sucks!
Skip class.  You're students will appreciate it.
Taking the fun out of it - for everyone.

Sickels
MinorLeagueBall has the Marlins Top 20 prospects posted. My favorite part is that, after the top 20, John notes 11 other guys who would likely be top 20 prospects in other organizations.

Anyone live blogging the game?
The UM station is carrying the game. 90.5 FM if you're in town or wvum.org if you're on one of the Internets.

Reading material
I know that it's gone down hill over the years and that they now fill some of their pages with NASCAR, but this week's USA Today Sports Weekly has Dontrelle Willis on the cover (re the WBC) and an interview with Miguel Cabrera inside.
