Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Weekend Open Thread

Once again we find ourselves basking in the glow of a weekend.  Which means only one thing - the totally open weekend open thread.

Feel free to discuss most anything: tales of musicology, getting spots out of the carpet, fishing with dynamite, why the Wilson Jet is the best basketball, how to siphon gas, the odds that Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow six years in a row, was The Ghost and Mr. Chicken Don Knotts finest work in cinema, the proper coloring when selecting an Anaheim pepper, anything.

Should this thread fill-up with such or other discussions, I will post another one for the Super Bowl.  If not, this will also serve as the Super Bowl Open Thread.

As always, have a great weekend!

After talking about how slow the open thread is, the open thread blows up and takes on a life of its own.

Is it just me
Or is the Super Bowl the most overrated event in sports?

But I'll still go watch it.

Me too
It's just pathetic.

There was an interesting article in a recent SABR publication (Nine maybe) that said that the "better" (quantified by some statistical measures) won only 60% of the first 100 (through 2004) World Series. If it was a "best of one", like the Super Bowl, I'd have to think it would be like a coin flip as to who wins. This year we get the fan favorite Steelers, who were the 6th best team in their conference. That's like having last year's Marlins or A's in the World Series. Big deal.

But I'm going to watch. If the WBC was on, I'd watch that instead.

Since you said it first
I'll admit the same.

The only other reason I'm watching is because I feel obligated. Everyone will be talking about it tomorrow and it's hard to explain how I watch just about every other sporting event but just am not interested in this.

Stupid pregame comment
On ESPN... I think it was Trey Wingo who said, "I don't think it's a good sign for the Steelers that the first player on the field for them in full uniform is their punter..."

Is he serious? Has he ever been to a football game before kickoff before? The punter is usually the first guy out there in uniform.

No wonder this stuff annoys me.

I bailed on two parties
Both hosted by two people who couldn't tell you which team was representing which conference (or maybe even the names of the conferences)-- although it is a little confusing this year with the Seahawks recent switch.

If you have to do anything tomorrow morning, I recommend staying home. It's going to be a late night.

There's plenty of wine (and hard booze) at my place. Feel free to come by and help yourself. It's a bit of a trip though.

Ok
So last Friday, I bought a new car. My old car was on it's last legs. It needed work, and instead of pouring more $ into it, I just traded it in on a new one.

Tuesday night, I go out to dinner with my best friend, who was moving to Georgia the next day. On our way to dinner, we stop at Best Buy to buy her a computer. We leave there and drive about 10 miles to the restaurant.

We come out of dinner. She gets in the car, I get in the car. I say, "I don't remember walking over that broken glass on our way into dinner." We think nothing of it. I put the car in reverse and look over my shoulder. Something looks wet on the back seat, so I reach back to see what it is. It's broken glass. She looks back too and sees that the window behind me (driver side, back door) is busted in. There's glass everywhere. Apparently someone followed us from Best Buy, broke the window, and stole the laptop. They only took the laptop. They left about $600 worth of software and jump drives. They also weren't interested in my checkbook, satellite radio (portable), or anything else.

So then we waited for the police, filled out a report, etc. It was about 2 am before I got to bed that night. Then I found out that I'm pretty much stuck on paying for the whole thing. The window was less than my deductible. The computer goes through my homeowners and not the car insurance. The homeowners insurance people told me that if I made a claim for the computer, they'd most likely cancel my policy when it came up for renewal. Then the brand new car was in the shop for three days, so I had to pay for a rental. All in all, it was a pretty expensive week.

and then I wont' home to Miami and had a BBQ at my place with friends.  Good times had by all.  Then I drove to Davie and took a Neuroanatomy Midterm on Monday.

Med School Rocks.

In other news, my laptops power source blew up, so I have no comp.  I'm in the comp. lab right now.  Hopefully I'll be back on soon.

All the best,

Did anyone run out to buy the new ESPN phone today? I didn't and I'm not planning too. Just wondering if it's really all that.
