Delgado is gone; I am sad

Here's Carlos Delgado in Mets camp yesterday. Note how he's laughing at Carlos Beltran's funny helmet:

Oh no - what's happened to Carlos? He's wearing the funny looking helmet now too:

Apparently the Mets acquired helmets from the future in addition to assembling the 2003 MLB All-Star team this offseason. If that's what the helmets of the future look like, I'm disappointed. Somewhere though, Jim Mandich (and Michigan alums everywhere) is happy. It looks like the Wolverine football helmet spent the offseason mating with baseball helmets.

Will the Marlins be subjecting us to a teal and black ensemble? Who's seen the helmets at Roger Dean this year?

Is it safe to assume that any division/season previews on FishStripes this season will use this format and style?

I sure hope that's a good assumption.

(And I had no idea about Jeremy Reed.)

Is it just an illusion
or is Carlos Delgado actually bending the bat just by swinging?

Do they not teach you this in Doctor school?
Actually, Delgado is using one of the Mets new spaghetti noodle bats. They're for BP purposes only.

Kidding.

Yes, the bat is really bending. Someone more scientifically oriented could explain it better to me, but it has something to do with speed, force, Newton's laws and all like that. If you ever see a picture of when the bat and ball actually make contact, you'll see that the ball compresses (like you could do with your hand to a tennis ball) on impact.

Here's another

But it's less pronounced. Check out Dr. Adair's "Physics of Baseball" for the science of stuff like this.

I head heard and seen pictures of the ball
but never noticed the bend on the bat being that pronounced.  Pretty strong.

I think it is
In the Yahoo link they say it's him.

I also want to know who the people behind him are.

Found Video
Beware... it is graphic... though also pretty damn funny.

Know that I know why he was doing it, I have to say that I applaud Barry for letting loose and having fun.

Maybe the reason he's been such an ass for so many years is that he was always holding back his true self, which finally "came out" today.

Go Barry.

By the way -
Since there seems to be nowhere else to put this -

Go Noles!

Went in to UF and beat up on the Gators tonight.

Dig it.

Taking the fun out of it - for everyone.

Simma down
I think the Noles started their top starter and the Gators rolled out their mid-week guy. Had the Noles lost last night, it would have been devestating.

I can still be happy, no?

By the way - how are the Canes doing?

Oh... never mind.

Mid-April
The Canes head up to Tally for tax day weekend. Let's talk then.

Really?
I figured you'd need time to come up with your excuses (radios in the club house, television feeds, etc). Mike Martin must have y'all prepped already. I guess that sounds right - FSU baseball is usually primed and ready to go in March... come June it's always a different story.

Why's it gotta be like that, now?

Why'd we have to go and get un-friendly?

Damn.

Sorry
I don't know why, but I'm really chippy today. You made the mistake of getting in the way.

Sorry.

Heh.
It's all good.  I'm just yanking you're chain.  Mostly I felt like that guy in Harlod and Kumar -

Cockboy, you just call me cockboy?

Yeah, you know I did. You're just stalling cuz you're not quick enough to think of a comeback.

You think I'm not quick enough. Guy thinks I'm not quick enough. Well I got news for you. I am quick enough!... Cockboy!

Is it just me...
...or does that thing on the helmet look like some sort of brain-sucking alien organism?  I mean, I have a ticket to watch the Mets play the Puerto Rico team Sunday, but if these brain-sucking black blobs are all over Port St. Lucie I don't think I wanna go...

I had been thinking "bike helmet"...
But, unfortunately, I think your description is probably closer to the truth. I just hope it's a Mets only thing (although something like helmet design is probably league wide or just something the Mets are doing for the spring).

The diary of random things...
Great NBA dunks.

This is freaking great. Kevin Johnson's dunks are underrated. And I totally forgot that Dr. J dunk was from a game... for some reason I thought it was from a dunk contest.

Pretty cool
Some of them anyway.  Ah, 'Nique.  That was back when I liked the NBA.

Poetic
Actually, when I saw the title of the posting that started this thread, I was kinda expecting some haiku.

You know, something like:

Delgado is gone
I am sad; season over.
No hope for the Fish.

It's going to be that kind of spring, I'm afraid.

by Dr F on Mar 2, 2006 11:57 AM EST reply actions

That could make for a good diary...
Or weekend thread. We'll have to invite the Gaslampballers over -- they're into haiku.
