Movie Club - OR... Lazy Man's Book Club

So - how about it?  Anyone up for some form of a super-charged book club?  Who needs to waste all that time actually READING?  Books suck.  Movies are much better - they tell you what to think and don't make you work.

How do we work this?  First off - how many people are interested?  And then what do we do?  Do we all agree to rent a movie the same week, watch it the same night and then report here and discuss in some sort of open thread?  Wy does that sound truly sad, now that I put it in print?

Hmmmm...

Also - which movies should we do?  Baseball only?  Sports in general?  I suggested 61* as I haven't seen it and planned to soon anyway - any other suggestions?  I was also thinking of Friday Night Lights (as I haven't seen it, either, and planned to see it soon) - but it isn't baseball.  There are plenty of other movies to check out.  Where should we start?

What do you guys think?  Let me know, people!

wait!
disregard my previous post!

for a real suggestion, try reservoir dogs, boondock saints, or sin city. if anyone on this site hasnt seen all three of those, he is sorely deprived.

I would be one of the top five general managers in baseball right now.

Okay.
I'll take that as a resounding "no."

Moving on...

Over at Pinstripe Alley
We're actually having a discussion on our favorite baseball movies (not really having so much as had, and by discussion I mean listing them off, except for one guy who felt the need to quote damn near the entirity of Major League).  Some of those guys might be interested.

I'm interested
I think if we go the movie route, it would be best to pick the movie and to say we'll start discussing it on a certain date (like a week from when you announce it). That would give everyone time to track it down and watch it.

That is basically what I was figuring
Sorry if that wasn't clear.

This just came out of the open thread from the other day and seemed like it might be a fun idea that we might actually be able to put together for once.

It's a little late now.
for me, anyway.  I think it is too late for this weekend already and I will be out of town (in Phoenix) the next weekend.

So we got plenty of time to pick one for a few weeks from now.  Unless you guys want to do one without me - which is fine by me, just don't expect me to pick it!

We'll wait for you
This movie thing is your thing.

But
You could still pick it now and say that we'll talk about it on 2/10 (or whenever). That will just give everyone more time, right?

Arlight -
In the meantime - let's get it set up.  What day would be good?  Fridays would probably be better for me.  Would that work for everyone else who is interested (and who exactly is that)?

Mike, Craig, Me?  Dr F?

Shall we start with 61*?

Well
College baseball is starting, so I'd prefer a night other than Friday. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday? But Friday would be fine too. Don't hold it up on account of me.

I think you're the leader for this one. Someone else can take the next movie maybe.

*61 works for me.

Thursday doesn't work for me at all
And I think most weekdays are bad for Craig.

We'll see.

I could do Sunday as well...

Winter is over
Miami played FIU over the weekend. Normally that's a good series, but both teams are young this year (and Miami won handily).

UM has Winthrop this weekend (who I think will be good, but they're down too), UCLA next weekend (in LA) and the Gators (in Coral Gables) the following weekend. That's a pretty good start to the season (in terms of entertaining games to watch), especially since spring training and the WBC haven't started yet.

Do the Noles open with any interesting series?

Baseball movies
I'd say there are plenty enough of them to restrict the field to that, for now.  I've not seen *61 yet either, and would like to, for what that's worth.

How about this -
We make this a semi-regular (monthly?) kind of thing - as we feel like it?  This month, I'll pick a movie and a day - next time someone else can do it.  Maybe once the season starts, we can do it Sunday evenings - when there aren't many games - and we can pick weeks when the Sunday Night Baseball game sucks...

Sounds reasonable
Seems best not to try to be too time restrictive on this -- lot of different schedules, probably too many differences to make a real strict schedule work.

Yup.
Let's try and make ONE work in February, though, eh?

I'm up for it
but as you so correctly said:  the weekdays will be hard for me to do.

How's about?
We shoot for trying this thing on Friday, February 17th?

61*

61* is a good choice
for me it would depend on the time of day Friday to know if I would be available.

But if whatever is decided on is great for everyone else, don't rearrange for me.

You suck.
It would be an evening thing, I am sure.  Of course - we got lots of time to work out exactly how to make this work...

Fun times
So long as there's no sobriety test, have it whenever you want.  I think bi-weekly would be do-able.  Pick the next movie a couple days after the review of the previous one.

Sounds good
We should have started this earlier in the offseason! Oh well, next year.

In season
perhaps we slow down the pace a bit, allow for more actual watching of ballgames as opposed to movies about ballgames--once a month in season, bimonthly in beginning (this year for certain, for fans o' the Fish) in October?

by Dr F on Feb 1, 2006 1:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is happening next Friday?
Unfortunately (for y'all at least), I am going to have to bow out of the debut of this fun event. I'll be on the road next weekend.
