The Train gets paid

I just saw a blurb in the MiamiHerald about Dontrelle Willis. Apparently the team execs have not completely lost their minds, and have rewarded Willis with the richest one-year contract ever for a first time arbitration eligible player.

Dontrelle will be paid $4.35 million next year, not including incentives such as winning the Cy Young or Silver Slugger awards, or being named to the NL-Allstar team.

The only downside is that we did not wrap him up longer-term. I guess for a fiscally conservative management team, this is the best that they could do. It's better than nothing, but not quite what I hoped for; though it's exactly what I expected and voted for in the poll.

My thoughts exactly
I wish he'd gotten a long term deal, but I'm sure Dontrelle will be wise with the money.

Do you think he will?
He already has a condo in Aventura (Williams Island or something like that).

Dontrelle doesn't strike me as the type to go out and blow all his money. But maybe I just think that because I love him.

Record
Who holds the record for biggest contract ever for a first year player? The MLB.com article says Willis has the biggest one for a pitcher. Did Pujols get more as a position player? I'm not saying that Willis deserves as much as Pujols, but I think Pujols got his huge deal pretty quickly. Can't remember and I'm not sure how to look it up.

Who else?
Derek Jeter
$5 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

Pujols got even more...
but in a multi-year deal. Here's the link to that.

When I saw the number I had to blink. $100million over 7 years. Yikes.

Yeah - that's crazy
But it pretty much guarantees he'll be a Cardinal for life. My guess is that he takes a hometown discount for his next contract.

Our friend Mr. Willis will have no incentive to do that.
