Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Astros (9/12)

Game One on Planet Houston today (do you get that reference Wiggins? It's less obscure than Spinal Tap). Planet Houston is in a different time zone (naturally), so the game won't start until 8:05.

Dontrelle Willis versus Brandon Backe tonight. This is no gimmie. Look at the stats all you want and feel comfortable. But we're effectively in the playoffs now (each game counts) and Backe was pretty freaking great in the playoffs last year (3 games, 18.2 innings, 0.91 WHIP, and 2.89 ERA).

Later tonight the Giants and Padres square off and B.L. Bonds is allegedly going to be in the lineup. That's probably worth tuning in to watch.

It's once again time for ichthyomancy. If you've been playing all season, please make your picks today. If you've never played before - start today. It doesn't cost anything, it's fun, and it's free.

Here's today's ichthyomancy pick table:

Person Player Attendance AAB
Carolina Willis 38,999 Marlins: 2-1
Colombo259
Craig Conine 38,003 Conine: Steals home
Danielfred1235 Delgado 38,375 Involved and didn't happen
Dex
Double B SP
Fishfan24 Cabrera 24,024 SP: No hitter
Jsprt05 Willis 35,000 Cabrera: HR*
Rastronomicals Willis 39,048 Willis: CG Loss
Seamusfurr Willis 37,012 Willis: onbase 3x
StrandedX02 Willis 39,727 Jones: 4-out save, 3 K
Wiggins Willis 38,511 Cabrera/Delgado BTB HR

Make your picks and discuss...

Site issues
The site seems to be running funny. If you encounter problems, there's a temporary open thread over at my old site that we can use for today. I suspect that we're having some server issues.

When did Spinal Tap get obscure?
I thought everyone knew that movie.  Oh well...

I'm not having any trouble with this site - but I won't be around much today, I expect.  Ya'll have fun.

Don't Mind Me . . .
But I love this ichthyomancy stuff.

Willis:  Complete Game loss (a nice blend of realism and optimism, that)

Attendance: 39,048

Planet Houston
Nope - it's where the people from Krypton said they landed when they came to Earth in Superman.

Picks
Chuck Slim.

38,375.

The Mig and the Chuck get back-to-back GRDs to that area in dead-center where the grass slants uphill (what's that thing called, BTW?).

That thing
It's called Tal's Hill. It's named for Tal Smith, who was in Houston's front office forever. It's taken from a hill that used to be in play at Crosley Field, the home of the Reds long, long ago.

Backe
has thrown 83 pitches through 5.  I don't think we will be seeing him much longer.

D-Train
gets his first K in the 5th

I guess he is doing that pitching to contact stuff tonight.

DTrain..
Looks like he's throwing his name into the hat for a silver slugger, or maybe back into the CY mix with another CG. Yeah, it's Carpenter's to lose, but it could happen.

Bonds taking the field
People chanting Barry in the stadium, and the Giants in their "Giagantes" jersey... pretty cool.

Marichal

I can't believe that
that was all that showed up for such a big game.  Houston sucks, man.

by wiggins on Sep 12, 2005 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that
I know anything about Houston... and not that anyone shows up in Miami...

Just that looking at their previous attendance numbers and knowing the importance of this game and knowing that DONTRELLE is pitching - you would think some people would show up.

Well
JHW 8 just made it's preview so I guess everyone was glued to the tube.

by craig on Sep 12, 2005 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That must be it.
Thanks for the tip.

Hey Craig - you able to get out to any of the games this week?

by wiggins on Sep 12, 2005 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

No,
unfortunately I don't live in Houston anymore.  If it were a weekend series then I could possibly catch some games.

But alas

Everyone's player pick is gonna get an AAB point tonight, probably?

Bonds nearly got a HR
A fan grabbed it, so it was originally called a HR, but called back into a double. He doesn't need spring training... he's just too sick.

I Was Watching It
Couldn't believe it myself. The Giants' feed is on MLB.TV tonight, and FSN Bay Area has a nice commercial about Barry keeping the promise he made on Opening Day. I was VERY impressed. Well, by that AND by the fan-interference double.

Points
I didn't get in until late last night, but I couldn't get onto the site for anything. I'm glad that some of you were able to though.

It seems that last night's problem was related to blogads and I think it affected all of SBNation. If I get more details, I'll let you know.

On to the points... Dontrelle was obviously point worthy last night (Carolina, Jsprt, Rastronomicals, Stranded, and Wiggins).

Delgado (no one!) and Conine (Craig) were also point worthy last night.

Fishfan wins the attendance point, but only because the attendance was pathetically low.

by mike42 on Sep 13, 2005 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

Also
I missed Double B and Seamus in the first sweep for points. They get points for Dontrelle.

Excuse You
I had Delgado.

by danielfred1235 on Sep 13, 2005 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but
You don't count as anybody. I wasn't going to give you points since ichthyomancy is rigged to screw you and only you.

Thanks For Clarifying
With you, I can never be sure. :-P
