Open thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Phillies (9/10)

We get what looks like another good pitching matchup tonight (7:05) with Jason Vargas and Brett Myers. This is a borderline must-win game for the Marlins. Actually, last night's game was much the same.

Nuke LaLoosh A.J. Burnett was a huge disappointment last night. After the game McKeon expressed his disappointment in Burnett's continued poor performance. When asked whether Burnett would make his next scheduled start (on Wednesday in Houston against Roger Clemens), McKeon was non-commital. I'm not sure who'd they start in place of Burnett, but all things considered, it's not very positive. Maybe we'll feel better about things after tonight's game.

It's once again time for ichthyomancy. If you've been playing all season, please make your picks today. If you've never played before - start today. It doesn't cost anything, it's fun, and it's free.

Here's today's ichthyomancy pick table:

Person Player Attendance AAB
Carolina Vargas 33,900 Cabrera: 2 Yard!

Danielfred1235 Hermida 34,000 Didn't happen

Frosty Bill.

34,000.

Wiggins: Sucks. And if that doesn't count, the number of runs Vargas allows is twice the number of hits he gets.

Don't Knock It
You were allowed to use it earlier in the season, and it almost got Craig some Comment of the Month honors. :-P

Picks
All bitterness aside from someone who's had plenty of reason to be bitter. (By the way, did anyone take a look at the boxscore of the Duke game today? 33 total yards...and yes, that's in the WHOLE GAME!)

Delgado

Houston
The matchups for the Houston series are out, as per today's official game notes:
Monday: Willis vs. Backe.
Tuesday: Beckett vs. Rodriguez.
Wednesday: Burnett vs. Clemens.
Thursday: Vargas vs. Pettitte.
I definitely think the first two games are the most winnable, what with A.J. pitching the way he has, Roger pitching the way HE has, and Vargas still kinda cutting his teeth.

Im not suprised that Jack took Carcion out
of the lineup and I think Hermida deserves to be in there because of the potential and versatility he brings. Also, Conine has been hot lately going 3 for 5 last nite.

On MLB.TV...
... I think I just heard Rich go, "Hello!" and then Tommy go, "We STILL have 10 minutes!" ... and someone just went in a heavy British accent, "A little guhl..." (Or at least, I hope those were Rich and Tommy. If they weren't, then the Phillies announcers sound JUST like Rich and Tommy.)

I Must Say...
This candid look at Rich and Tommy as they get ready for the broadcast is QUITE funny. Tommy just went "Pollo Tropical!" And the preview of what Rich is gonna say in the opening collage was good too. :-D

Vargas has had trouble
keeping his pitch count low in every start except one (his CG)
Francouer who?

by Jsprtold on Sep 10, 2005 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

An idea
Maybe they should keep him separated from Burnett

by mike42 on Sep 10, 2005 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Troubling
In Jason Vargas' 9 starts this year (including tonight) he has thrown 851 pitches in 48 1/3 IP.

This is about 17 pitches/IP....not very good.

Thats 152 pitches/9 IP!!!

Francouer who?

by Jsprtold on Sep 10, 2005 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Nice work
Apparently he hasn't gotten the memo about pitching to early contact.

I wonder what the plan is with him. If they didn't need him for the playoff push, I'm sure they'd shut him down and prepare him to do some work in the Caribbean this winter on throwing fewer pitches.

This is not encouraging for a guy who's supposed to be our #4 starter next year.

by fishfan24 on Sep 10, 2005 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

Fear the Redneck.
Like the Mig, he doesn't suck.

BTW, can anybody help me out? I'm trying to do my scorecard for the game right now (I was out at a play b/c... well, b/c the Phils got out to an early lead and I was being pessimistic, to be honest. Anywho, the roster on the official website doesn't list a number for Johnson. What number was he wearing?

Not to say Jack will do this or anything,
but how about starting Josh Johnson instead of Vargas on Thursday?
Francouer who?

by Jsprtold on Sep 11, 2005 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

I like the bravery of the idea
But I'm not sure his first start should be in such a crucial game, when we don't know how he'll do. I mean, they're all important from here on out, but the 'Stros series is really really really important.

What do you think?

by fishfan24 on Sep 11, 2005 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Points
Once again everyone underestimated the attendance (looks like the folks in Philly like a playoff chase). Wiggins had the highest estimate, so he gets the point (the crowd was 40,479).

Wiggins and Stranded get a point for Delgado. Conine, Johnson, Jones, and LoDuca were also worthy of point consideration for last night's win.
