Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Nationals (6/5)

TIME: 1:05 @ RFK

                             vs.
           MARLINS                              NATIONALS
  A.J. Burnett (3-4, 2.91)              John Patterson (2-1, 2.85)

The Fish catch no break today, as John Patterson - who has been stellar this season - takes the hill for the Nats. A.J. sure seems to have some tough luck in drawing such matchups.

I'm sticking with LoDuca (or Treanor - whoever gets the start behind the plate) and a crowd of 32,123.

Other Picks:
Double B - Burnett
Carolina - Burnett and 34,870
Craig - Encarnacion and 34,103

Make your picks and discuss...

I'm sticking
with Pierre.  He's going to continue to break out of that skump.

Unless he doesn't start.

In which case, Lowell will.

...and if neither of them do, than I have no business predicting anything.  Although it CAN be tough with Jack...

Commentary / Suggestion
Well, despite the heartbreaking loss, I consider it a good thing to see us get 12 hits in a ballgame. Now, the number of LOBs could stand to go down significantly, but still... (Oh, and the reason I made no predictions is b/c I slept past the start of the game.)

I'd like to suggest a thread where we can vent and rant and rave and cuss and everything (discretion warnings obviously would be in the original post) about the recent struggles. I woulda started it, but I wanted permission from the bigwigs before I did it. ;) Anywho, time to go. L8a g8as!

Go for it
I may have an entry similar to what you're talking about tomorrow, but feel free to start up a diary today.

All Set
It's up, feel free to swear your brains out. ;)

Well I'll start
The problem right now is the hitting.  The team has 4 starting pitchers with an ERA under 3.00.  The relief has been spotty at best and tends to implode when the team most needs them to come through.  But the hitting just hasn't been there the past 3 or 4 weeks.  It's hard watching these starters give consistently good and great efforts and then having it waste away because the team can't get a timely hit.  The top of the 8th is a great example.  Harris ties it at 3, 1 out, man on third--Marlins don't get him home.  Good teams get that run in.  This isn't a good baseball team and is really starting to look a lot like the 2003 Dodgers with a worse relief staff.

Ichthyomancy
Attendance today was announced at 40,995. That means the attendance point goes to Carolina, who had the high guess of the day.

Half a point for those that had Burnett (Double B, Carolina, and Craig) and LoDuca (me) for his three hit performance.

I'll even be generous today and give half a point to Wiggins for Lowell.

While I'll take the point...
I really had Pierre today.

I'm too disgusted with the team right now to even think about anything good...

How can they lead the league in average (which I know is a flawed stat, but still) and consistently get hits, but not get any runners home?  That takes talent!

Damnit.

As much as I need it...
I didn't earn it.  I didn't have Burnett, I had Encarnacion.

I Think...
... Mike's just giving a point to everyone who made any predictions b/c so few were made today. :P

I think...
that more comments such as these could cause me to start deducting points for the first time in site history. ;-)

Or, if you'd like to test your theory, play ichthyomancy next Sunday. :-)

On Second Thought...
... this one really deserves the comment of the month honors. ;)

I still like Craig's
Maybe we need a People's Choice category, but until then, I have the only vote.

Honesty
You can keep the half point for being honest.

Instead of correcting the standings, I will take the time to brush up on my reading comprehension.

You are too good to us
We don't deserve such a giving, caring leader.  Or was it really just laziness?  hmmmm...

Naw - I'm sticking with generous.

by wiggins on Jun 6, 2005 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Some of both
You got generosity.

Craig benefitted from both my stupidity and laziness.
