Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Rays (6/25)

TIME: 6:15 @ the Trop

                             vs.
         MARLINS                                      RAYS
Scott Olsen (6-4, 3.92 in AA)            Casey Fossum (3-5, 3.99)

Still on the road (and in person at tonight's game). Craig is in charge all weekend.

In other news, SBNation was named by Time magazine (scroll down three-quarters of the way) as one of the 50 Coolest Web Sites of 2005. I'm not sure if Time is still relevant, but it's very nice nonethless. I'm fairly sure that if this site wasn't polluted with the likes of Wiggins and myself that we would have made the top 10 (kidding - the list is just the 50 coolest, they're not ranked).

In ichthyomancy, I'll take Olsen tonight and a crowd of 14,284.

Other Picks:
Double B - Olsen
Craig - Gonzalez and 14,284 (Craig - I had 14,283 picked - this was pre-written - before I saw your pick, so I changed mine to match yours)

Make your picks and discuss...

how much it means to me to know that I have truly helped pollute a perfectly good website.  It has been a dream of mine since I was a little tike...

Picks -
LoDuca (or whoever plays catcher - Willingham, maybe?)

and 12,345

Always wanted to do that.

Picks
Willingham if he plays, Mikey if Willingham doesn't.

13,200 for attendance.

Olsen manages a quality start, and Delgado gets the HR I was calling for yesterday.

Welp...
Looks like Willingham's in as the DH. Should be fun to watch both our n00bs cut their teeth. Especially since playing the Rays is a little bit like playing a minor-league team all over again. :-)

third place??!
I go out of town for one night and I lose my lead. Anyway, for tonight I'll take Cabrera again and 13,001 for attendance.

C'mon guys let's not keep wasting...
the good work that Pierre and Castillo are doing.

Olsen relieved
A very nice Major League debut.  Since I am going to recap it later I won't bother here.

Lo Duca gets his second double
I may start cheerleading since I missed the first inning and frankly we haven't done much offensively since.

Maddux
gets win 312 for his stellar career.  Sorry Mike.

Sigh
I suppose I'll have to live with this. The Marlins win over him last week is about all that one can hope for.

Game Note
Brazelton had Tommy John surgery when he was 15.

Boo
Brazelton was booed by pretty much everyone when he entered. It was the loudest I think it ever got for the past two games.

That is...
the birthday boy's second RBI for the game.

It appears that the only way one...
is going to get to relieve for the Marlins today is to have your last begin with a M.

Sorry I wasn't here to keep you company.  These women will be the death of me...

Glad the game went well - it sounds like a very good one to have some Fishstripes people at.  I look forward to the report from them!

Well...
I ain't sayin' I would have chosen differently...

But I am sorry I wasn't here to shoot the proverbial feces with the man in charge.

A little early?
You're home a little early from the big date, aren't you chief?

I suppose that makes sense though - since you were on the meter and all.

Icthyomancy
A recap of the ones in play tonight:

Cabrera                 5        0       1      1        0

Lo Duca                 5        0       3      1        0

Willingham*           3        0       0      0        0

Olsen                   5.2     4      2       1       2      6

*  includes Harris who PH for Willingham

Attendance:  13,232

No HR.  Quality starts are generally thought to have to go at least 6 innings but this is for Mike to decide.

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

I thought
it was seven innings for a QS...  Any which way - for a major league debut - I'll take it.

by wiggins on Jun 25, 2005 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think given...
his run total six would have done, who knows.

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

3 runs in 6 IP
A quality start is defined as going 6 innings and giving up 3 runs or less.  I don't recall if the runs have to be earned or not though.  In any case, he didn't go the requisite 6 innings, so no QS for Olsen.

I was too lazy to actually look it up...

Olsen
becomes the fifth Marlin to win his Major League debut.

Congrats!

Who are the others?
What are other Marlins won their Major League debut?

by Double B on Jun 25, 2005 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Winners
Penny, Burnett and Beckett are three of the four.  I can't remember the fourth, sorry.

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

According To Press Pass...
... it was Jason Grilli. The new list of Marlins players to win their MLB debut:

A.J. Burnett, 8/17/99
Brad Penny, 4/7/00
Jason Grilli, 5/11/00
Josh Beckett, 9/4/01
Scott Olsen, 6/25/05

I couldn't remember.  Do you know if he is still in the Tigers organization?

by craig on Jun 26, 2005 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

No Clue
I read the Marlins' Press Pass notes, not the Tigers'. I had no idea who he was till I read those notes today.

Olsen
Great debut for Olsen tonight. I came away feeling like his results were better than his stuff. If he gets another start against the Braves (or whoever) next week, I don't expect things to go as smoothly.

Not sure if it came up on the broadcast tonight, but Olsen had a huge contingent of friends and family at the game tonight. There were literally doznes of Olsens at the ballpark tonight. I sat right behind Olsen's mom and a young lady who apparently has hopes of becoming the future Mrs. Olsen. I didn't talk to them because I thought it would be unsporting to steal away the guy's girlfriend on the night of his ML debut.

Interestingly, the entire Olsen contingent knew that Olsen would only go a maximum of 6 innings. They were all tense during the sixth. None of them were sure if he'd be staying with the club past this start though. They were all hopeful that he'd get a start against the Braves next week.

More on the whole Tampa/St. Pete/Trop experience later.

Points
Danielfred1235 was very close on the attendance tonight, so he gets the point. Carolina was also very close, but under Ichthyomancy 2.0 scoring rules, a point is only awarded to whoever is closest. But if Carolina wishes to complain, I will allow it (but won't award any points).

Player points to Wiggins (LoDuca), Double B (Olsen), and myself (Olsen).

No above and beyond points. I'm tempted to give Wiggins credit for Olsen's quasi-quality start, but he didn't get Delgado's homer, so it's a moot point, since above and beyond picks are all or nothing.

Great debut for Olsen. Hopefully it will continue.
