Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Rockies at Marlins (5/8)

TIME: 1:05 @ Joe Robbie Stadium

ROCKIES PROBABLE:      MARLINS PROBABLE:

Jeff Francis (1-1, 5.02)      Al Leiter (1-2, 4.91)

Once again I won't be around today for the game as I have to do some work and I'm going to catch the Heat game in person this afternoon.

For today's Ichthyomancy: Craig has the right fielder (whoever starts) and DoubleB has Cabrera. I'm going to take Pierre today and predict attendance of 19,258. If they weren't playing the Rockies, I'd probably offer double points to anyone brave enough to take Leiter.

Make your picks and discuss...

'cept
He's not playing - so I guess I'm stuck with Treanor.  Maybe he'll have a good day!

OK - I'm screwed.

Rookie Pitcher
How long before they call up AAA to get a pitcher to replace Leiter?

Not counting on it
Leiter's struggling right now, but I don't think he's going to get dropped from the rotation any time soon. For one, they're paying him a lot of money this year. Plus, there's not someone waiting in the minors that they're dying to give the opportunity to. Even in 2003 when some folks were high on Willis, the organization didn't want to bring him up - they really only did it when they were forced to because of injuries to Burnett and Beckett.  That's probably what it would take to get a youngster up this year, and I don't think we want to see that.

Leiter
Then I think he needs to be skipped over on his next start or something else in that vein. He looked bad today. Worse than any other outing he's had. Maybe getting skipped over will knock him out of whatever funk he's in. I remember reading once that he overthinks his pitches while he's on the mound. A jolt to his senses could be the trick.

Could work
That could work. It will be interesting to see what they do. With the off-day on Thursday, they could skip Leiter on Friday and use Beckett instead.

Today's Points
While it was an ugly loss today, 5 hits out of Pierre is worth something for Ichthyomancy.  So whoever picked him - oh wait, that's me - gets points today.

Attendance was 17,538. Except for the first two numbers, Carolina and I were pretty close.

Issues
And if you took issue with my awarding myself points yesterday for picking Pierre, since it was such an ugly loss: Pierre was the first Marlin to collect five hits in a game since April of 2001. I think that's worth a point.
